About Misiones
Misiones province is at the northwest corner of Argentina. It shares international borders with Paraguay to the northwest, Brazil, which wraps around the north, east and south of the province. Within Argentina, to the southwest, Misiones borders Corrientes Province. It is also regraded as part of the wider Mesopotamia region. The capital city of Misiones is
Posadas, which is built on the western shore of the Paraná River opposite Encarnación in Paraguay.
Misiones - Tourist Attractions
Misiones can be split into 5 sub-regions. Most of the tourist attractions revolve around nature, with waling and hiking, horseback riding, natural history and eco tourism, photography, water sports, camping, trekking, mountain bike, archeological tourism and rafting being the principle reasons people come.
- Aguas Grandes zone - home to the Iguazu Waterfalls, a World Heritage Site and one of the largest waterfalls on earth. It is formed by 275 cascades that are up to 70 meters high. Also in the area is a Birds Recuperation Center and an important Ecomuseum with clay artifacts over 300 years old.
- Three Frontier Spot - stand on the point where Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet, marked by an obelisk erected in 1903.
- Mocona and San Pedro cascades - series of 3 kilometres of waterfalls and cascades in the Selva Region.
- El Dorado Department - famous for the yerba mate plantations; the most popular and traditional drink in Argentina.
- Berrondo - considered one of the most beautiful places in Misiones, in the Las Sierras region.
- Las Sierras - stunning mountain scenery, with notable waterfalls of Orquideas, Paca and Rosa Mística.
- Mbotavi Natural Reserve - lots of wildlife.
- Ruins of the South - ruins of towns abandoned in the 18th century include San Ignacio de Miní, Nuestra Señora de Loreto, Reducción de Santa Ana and Santa María La Mayor.
Flores - another mountainous region filled with dramatic scenery and waterfalls. Great for walking and trekking. Also contains Capiovi city, home to many German and Swiss immigrants
