Palma de Mallorca - New to the tour
New to this Mallorca tour area a number of the sights and attractions in Palma de Mallorca, coloquially known simply as 'Palma'. Palma is the capital of Mallorca, the arrival point for most holiday makers by either air or sea.
About Mallorca
Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, south of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea. It is often spelt 'Majorca' by the English speaking world. Mallorca is famous for the many calas and beaches that are found on the 250 miles of coastline. The southern and eastern coasts of Mallorca are especially popular with tourists as the beaches and calas (Spanish for cove) here are often sandy. The Northern side of Mallorca is mountainous, and here the calas are often rocky and hard to access.
The most well known towns in Mallorca include Palma, Pollenca, Andraxt, Rajada and Arta. Away from these popular beach resort destinations, Mallorca has many little villages tucked away in the interior of the island. Places like Alaro, and Valdermossa nestled in the mountains are worth visiting for a break from the sand and people. Mallorca has a complicated history involving hundreds of years of rule by the Arabs and Moors. Town names like Binissalem are derived from this time.
The northwest of Majorca is mountainous, rising to 4,739 ft (1,444 m) in the Puig Major. The inland areas of Mallorca are very popular with cyclists. The road Pollenca to Playa Formentor up the mountains to the fantastic Formentor Viewpoint. Many castles and churches were also built at the tops of the mountains. These include the Polleca Monastry and St. Luc Monestry.
Many of the coastal areas have been built up as resorts, but again many quaint small pensions and hotels can be found inland, tucked away in more restful and traditional settings. Some of these hotels are also listed within this guide.
Other Balearic Islands
Ibiza and Menorca are both a short plane flight or ferry trip from Mallorca. All the ferries to Ibiza leave from Palma, but some of the ferries to Menorca also leave from Alcudia, arriving in Cuitadella on Menorca.
