A panorama of the San Francisco skyline and view over the bay taken from the roof of the warehouse at the end of Pier 45. Naturally, this roof is closed to the public. I was allowed access to take pictures of the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, an historic warship moored alongside Pier 45. It's superstructure dominates the view over the bay in this panorama. Getting up the narrow ladder was easy compared to fending off the seagulls who considered me very much the intruder to their domain. I had visions of them dive-bombing the camera with a messy clean-up job to follow.
San Francisco from Pier 45 Warehouse Roof - San Francisco visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'San Francisco from Pier 45 Warehouse Roof' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from California.
Both the SS Jeremiah O'Brien and USS Pampanito SS-383 Submarine are moored alongside Pier 45, which is one of the major piers in the Maritime National Historical Park. Next along is Hyde Street Pier at which the Eureka ferry-ship and the Balclutha tall ship are berthed, along with the C.A.Thayer, the Hercules, the Eppleton Hall and other historic ships.
Views across San Francisco bay take in the unmistakable Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz National Park prison island (seen here in the distance behind the SS Jeremiah's stern), Angel Island, Treasure Island and a host of other landmarks. You also can take in the San Francisco city skyline and the skyscraper building up on the steep slopes further south. The Pier 39, well-known as the amusement arcade and entertainments section of the Fisherman's Wharf attractions, is visible - a much shorter pier which can be seen to the right of the SS Jeremiah's bow. Further still in the same direction, the glistening white hulls of the yachts in the Fisherman's Wharf Marina can be seen. Whilst the major attractions and shoreline here can be exceptionally busy with visitors and tourists, take a stroll out along one of these piers for the best and clearest views and an excellent vantage point to re-orientate yourself at the very center of one of the most spectacular and scenic city harbours in the world.
