Panorama taken from a raised walkway on Pier 39. Pier 39 is one of the most popular tourist attractions in San Francisco, full of shops and restaurants. Pier 39 also has a tourist information office for San Francisco. This panorama shows some of the shops on the upper level of Pier 39 and the view down onto the Pier 39 Carousel ride. The picture was taken on a sunny spring morning.

Pier 39 in Fisherman's Wharf lies between the Embarcadera and the Maritime National Historical Museum. While other piers such as Hyde Street Pier have historical ships at anchor in a living museum, and the marina pier is a working yacht harbour, Pier 39 is dedicated to fun and catering for the amusement, entertainment and comfort of the visitors to the many attractions in the Fisherman's Wharf area. Indeed, it proclaims itself as the most visited tourist attraction in the USA.

Much of the pier is a two storey mall with a range of shops from the quirky, to useful such as sports goods and seaside clothing, to children's toys and souvenirs. There are a range of restaurants and cafes with indoor and outdoor seating, but as this is the focal point for refreshments, this area can become exceptionally busy. Around pier 39 there are innumerable street performers, artists, and unfortunately, hawkers. Pier 39 does cater for the every whim of the tourist, so is very popular with and focused on visitors rather than locals. However, it is ironic that the star attraction on the pier is not a manufactured amusement, but inarguably the endearing Sea Lions who, for several months, dwell on the floating pontoons at the end of the pier and delight in putting on a show for their appreciative audience.

Pier 39 is a must-visit location for the spectacular views across the bay and to the Golden Gate Bridge, across the historic ships anchored amidst the contemporary fishing fleet, the private yachts, the ferries and boat cruises. However much of a tourist attraction, this is still a busy working harbour - Pier 39 just makes sure that you can enjoy the view whilst well catered for.
