Inspiration Point is named for the inspiring panoramic views across the Presidio historic parkland to the San Francisco Bay. Breath-taking views make this a popular place a few minutes drive from the bustling city to rest and reflect in tranquil surroundings. It's also very popular with hikers who enjoy the many miles of trails throughout the Presidio park landscape and Crissy Field Beach area.
Currently, the view looks out over the heavily forested landscape. Much of the Presidio was planted with non-native species during restoration projects in the early 20th century. However, once the US Government handed the custodianship of Presidio over to Presidio Trust and the National Park Service once it was no longer required as a military base, massive environmental restoration works have begun and have already radically rejuvenated Crissy Field beach.
At time of writing, plans are afoot to remove some of these Monterey Pines trees and replace them with new plantings of native species. The rare Serpentine grasslands flourish in a distinctive soil which naturally has a chemical composition rich in heavy metals which are toxic to many species of plant. Although species can evolve of centuries to adapt, the endangered habitat of natural serpentine grassland was dramatically reduced due to changes in land use, but now it is planned to restore these as an ecological haven for rare plants including the Presidio Clarkia - thus, in turn, encouraging wildlife and birds to return and re-establish habitats here. Current non-native plants change the micro-climate here and that interferes with the biological evolution of the area, so by reintroducing the species which should have grown here, it is hoped that eventually, the Presidio park lands will be restored as much as possible to their authentic and natural state. During these restorative works, some areas may be semi-protected by fences and there will be information sign posts to guide visitors.
